28/9 Barnton Tunnel to Devil's Garden, River Weaver Pt.2

Opposite the lift, the Bruner Mond chemical works, now scheduled for demolition.

We decided to head downstream. The Wallerscote soda ash works in the process of being demolished. It was quite a sight.

It looked like a scene from War of the Worlds or some such

10 minutes further on and we were cruising through countryside

Not a particularly interesting pic, but we were moored on the canal directly above here last night

In Saltersford Lock. These are the houses from which the Audi, Saab and Discovery came from

We stopped for lunch at Acton and as we left I rang the lockie at Dutton Lock to tell her we were on our way. She said to proceed carefully as we neared the lock as she had a CRT barge towing a big steam tug coming up in the lock and we would be passing each other.

Keeping a wary eye out, we were expecting something a little larger than the rowing four coming our way

We turned up toward the lock - still nothing

The wreck of the MV Chica which started life as a Norwegian fishing vessel at the end of the 19thC and ended life as a restaurant boat

And then we heard a honk and there they were exiting the lock.

The CRT barge

Towing the Kerne

And there they go

On their way to the steam rally this weekend at Ashton. They locked up onto the Weaver from the Manchester Ship Canal. Apparently a bigger steam boat is coming through on Friday.

More attractive cottages at Dutton Lock

An elegant timber footbridge carrying the towpath acrossmthemoriginal navigation

And just around the bend was the Dutton Viaduct, built in 1837 by the Grand Junction Railway.

Remember the mooring hotspot we passed yesterday- the site of a canal breach in 2012. Well here we are looking up at it

Looking back up river from tonight's mooring at Devil's Garden

Aqua Life and Lawrence have loved their day on the river. There is no doubt that AL appreciated the deeper water and she purred along at quite a clip on 1400 revs. And now she has done another of the 7 wonders of the waterways.

7 3/4 miles, 2 locks, 1 tunnel, Anderton Lift Bridge in 6 1/2 hours
