Tuesday 20/9 top of Barrowford Locks to bridge 109 (New Barn Bridge), Church Pt 1

Once again we left our mooring at 8.00 only to proceed a couple of hundred metres to the water point at the top of the locks. Lawrence had spoken to the boat moored behind us and they were keen to share the locks. So while we filled with water the other boat set the locks ready for us. By the time we had filled a Lockkeeper had appeared and what would have taken us (7 locks) at least two hours on our own took only an hour with four of us working the locks.  Two to work the current lock and two to get the next one ready.

Soon after leaving Barrowford bottom lock we were into the outskirts of Nelson. The first of the 'don't stop there' towns. Some of the dodgier looking inhabitants

This old warehouse has a new lease of life as a health centre

Leaving Nelson

Next up was Burnley - a definitely don't stop there town. A familiar canal hazard to be avoided in such places

What was behind this wall is unknown, but it went on for at least a mile

It looks benign

Then this

Which jammed us on the opposite wall of the canal. Some shoving and a bit of deft manoeuvre in from Lawrence got us off. And then this, fly tipping which is a huge problem in England.

The start of the Burnley Embankment, another of the seven wonders of the waterways. It is 3/4 mile long and 60' high and carries the L&L across the converging valleys of the Calder and Brun.

A heron in a very odd position on the embankment.
