Friday 7/10. Bridge 21 to Bugsworth Basin, Upper Peak Forest Canal pt1

Cast off in grey drizzle at 10.30 within half an hour the drizzle turned to rain and at the second of three swing bridges of the day, Lawrence had to don his waterproof pants.
Cute cottage

About 11.30 the rain eased to a drizzle and the weather started to clear

Rapidly, 5 mins later

Coming into New Mills

The Swizzles Factory at New Mills

Just past the factory and the view expands again

Bridge 39

We reached our destination, Bugsworth Basin just after 1.00. The basin is one of the termini(?) of the Peak Forest Canal and consists of an upper, middle and lower basin, constructed for loading limestone which came from quarries hereabouts via a tramways system. In the 1890s up to 80 boats a day were loaded.

 The lower basin

The middle basin

And the upper basin, where we are moored
